Deductive Teaching Strategy

DEDUCTIVE TEACHING STRATEGY.

 - coming from unknown to known, complex to simple, and abstract to concrete.

  - teacher will define the topic whereas the students are not given a chance to say their views.

 - deductive teaching strategy is also sometime called as Direct Instruction.


Purposes of Deductive Teaching Strategy.


* students retain information better through this mode of learning.

* less time consuming.

* better transfer of learning.

* teacher can use a broad spectrum of materials.


The phase in Deductive Teaching are :


Phase 1: presentation of the abstraction.\

Phase 2: teacher illustration.

Phase 3: students give example of concepts or students apply generalization yo a new situation.

Phase 4: students restate what they have learned concept or generalization.


The role of a Teacher.


* he or she gives and disseminates all information.

* acts as the information coordinator.


The role of Students:

* remembering previous principles, or generalization.

* applying in a new situation.

* passive listener.

* carries out activities after teacher's instruction.


ADVANTAGES OF DEDUCTIVE TEACHING STRATEGY.

- Less time consuming.

- different from rote learning.

- involves all level of questions.

- quicker way to teach concepts.


DISADVANTAGES OF DEDUCTIVE TEACHING STRATEGY.

- Students are not active in the beginning of a deductive lesson.

- its a teacher-centered.

- less constructivist.

- not challenging for brighter students.


Characteristics of Deductive Teaching.

*  does not give any new knowledge.

* quick process.

* method of verification.

* method of instruction.

* also known as direct instruction.

*  used in a large classroom setting.


The difference:


INDUCTIVE TEACHING                                    DEDUCTIVE TEACHING
